Apple Crumble

Vegan Version of the Classic Dessert

If you are anything like me and don’t love pie for the holidays, you have to try this apple crumble. It still gives all the cozy and warm holiday vibes without being too much. Not to mention, this crumble is a lot quicker to make than traditional apple pie.

No one will know this crumble is completely vegan and gluten-free. The cinnamon adds the perfect amount of spice to the warm apples and topping.

If you’re looking to switch it up from traditional pie this holiday season you have to try this recipe!

Apples: any type of apple will work in this recipe. I used gala apples. You can also substitute the apples for any fruit of choice.

White sugar: in this recipe I used a mix of white sugar and coconut sugar. If you are looking to substitute the white sugar, you can use any granulated sugar of choice.

Coconut sugar: you can substitute for brown sugar or any granulated sugar of choice.

Almond flour: I haven’t tested any other flours in this recipe. I wanted to use almond flour so that there was a gluten-free option.

Oats: I have only tested this recipe with rolled oats. Quick oats should work; however, I would recommend sticking with rolled oats for a better texture.

Vegan butter: I used the brand Vio Life. Any vegan butter will work. If you aren’t vegan, traditional butter should work. Be sure your butter is cold so that you can combine it correctly with the other ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Apples

  • Sugar (white + coconut)

  • Almond flour

  • Cinnamon

  • Oats

  • Vegan butter

Recipe:

Apple mixture:

  • 4 medium apples chopped and peeled (about 3 ½ cups)

  • ¼ cup white sugar

  • 4 tablespoons almond flour

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Topping:

  • 1 cup almond flour

  • ½ cup rolled oats

  • ¼ cup white sugar

  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • ½ cup cold butter

Directions:

1.    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. I used a 6-inch circular pan for this recipe.

2.    To the circular pan we will start by making the apple mixture. Add the chopped apples, sugar, almond flour, and cinnamon. Stir until everything is coated.

3.    To make the topping, in a separate bowl add the almond flour, rolled oats, white sugar, coconut sugar, and cinnamon. Stir to combine. Add in the chunks of cold butter.

4.    Use a fork or pastry cutter to combine the flour mixture with the butter.

5.    Once combined sprinkle evenly on top of the apple mixture.

6.    Bake for 40-45 minutes.

Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before eating. This allows the topping to firm up completely. I like to serve mine with vegan vanilla ice cream. You can also do whipped cream or cool whip or leave as is!

Be sure to store the crumble in the refrigerator or freezer. The crumble should last up to 5 days in the refrigerator. You can store in the freezer to last longer. It should last for a month minimum.
