Chocolate Protein Donut Holes

Chocolate Protein Donut Holes

Easy, High Protein Snack

There’s nothing better than a quick and easy high protein recipe that you can quickly throw together and have on hand all week. These donut holes are always my go-to.

This recipe is super versatile and can be customized to your preferences. You can switch up the protein powder flavors, add-ins, and what you coat the donut holes in.

Protein powder: I used a vanilla plant-based protein in this recipe. Any flavor or protein will work. I haven’t tested whey-based protein powders; however, I would assume they work the same. If you’re worried about it not working, add slowly and stir as you go!

Cacao powder: I like using cacao powder for the extra nutrients. You can use cocoa powder as well. You could also leave this out if you don’t want these to be chocolate. If you’re leaving this out, you would need to add more protein powder or coconut flour.

Coconut flour: I like using coconut flour to keep the recipe gluten and grain free. You could add more protein powder in place of this or almond flour. Keep in mind the measurements WILL BE different. I recommend slowly adding and stirring until you reach a dough consistency.

Applesauce: I always use unsweetened applesauce. Ideally, you want the only ingredients to be water and apples. You can use sweetened applesauce.

Coconut sugar: this is my sugar of choice for this recipe to keep it refined sugar free, however, any granulated sugar will work. I haven’t tested liquid sweeteners in this recipe.

Nondairy milk: I used unsweetened almond milk. Any nondairy milk will work. If you aren’t vegan, traditional milk will work too.

Optional: chocolate chips: you can use whatever chocolate chips you prefer. You could also add in anything else such as nuts or dried fruits.

Optional: powdered sugar: I use the powdered sugar in the glaze. You can omit the glaze or coat in chocolate, coconut flakes, etc.

Ingredients:

  • Protein powder

  • Cacao powder

  • Coconut flour

  • Applesauce

  • Coconut sugar

  • Nondairy milk

  • Optional: chocolate chips

  • Optional: powdered sugar

Recipe:

  • ¼ cup cacao powder

  • ¼ cup protein powder

  • ¼ cup coconut flour

  • 1/3 cup applesauce

  • ¼ cup coconut sugar

  • 3 tablespoons nondairy milk

  • Optional: ½ cup chocolate chips

  • Glaze: powdered sugar + nondairy milk

Directions:

1.   In a bowl mix the cacao powder, protein powder, and coconut flour. Add in the applesauce, coconut sugar, and nondairy milk. Stir until a dough forms.

2.   If you’re adding chocolate chips, fold them in now. Using a cookie scoop or spoon, scoop the dough, then roll into balls. Place on a plate. Repeat until all the dough is used.

3.   Place in the freezer for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes, combine the glaze ingredients and dip each donut hole into the glaze (skip this step if omitting the glaze).

Be sure to store these in an airtight container in either the refrigerator or freezer. They should last in the refrigerator for one week. They will last a lot longer in the freezer. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
